About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Commissioning Manager to lead testing, startup, and performance verification for one of the world's largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolios. In this role, you will act as the Owner's representative, overseeing contractors and vendors to ensure safety, compliance, and operational readiness across utility-scale energy storage and solar-coupled power systems. You will combine hands-on technical oversight with strategic schedule management, driving projects from mechanical completion through final acceptance testing.
You will travel up to 25% to project sites across the United States for on-site commissioning and testing, while providing remote support through SCADA monitoring the remainder of the time.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and report on all commissioning and performance testing activities executed by contractors and vendors at the project site.
- Develop and maintain commissioning schedules in collaboration with the SCADA integrator and execution project manager, aligned with mechanical completion milestones.
- Lead site acceptance testing, OEM testing, plant balancing, and capacity testing to verify system performance.
- Support PPA, GIA, and ISO testing with customers, transmission owners, and independent system operators.
- Coordinate with the SCADA and IT teams to validate ICCP functionality, perform functional checks, and support CEWIS Critical Point Checkout with ROCC alarm verification.
- Review performance data to identify deficiencies, manage test energy forecasts, and support AVR/AGC notification and integration.
- Champion on-site safety by participating in safety programs, audits, and ensuring compliance with all applicable standards.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience in power systems construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Demonstrated background commissioning a minimum of 100 MWh or 5 utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems.
- Thorough understanding of Li-Ion battery technical performance, integration, and safety within energy storage applications.
- Deep knowledge of DC systems (0–2,000 VDC) and AC systems (480 V–34.5 kV).
- Experience with containerized systems, skids, controllers, transformers, and combiners.
- Proficiency with SCADA platforms, control system troubleshooting, and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong organizational, communication, and schedule management skills, with the ability to interface effectively with third parties and executives.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet driving record requirements; must be able to discern color-coded HMI controls.
Preferred Skills
- Prior experience supporting SCADA integration and ICCP/IT functional checks.
- Familiarity with ISO/GIA/PPA testing protocols and performance data analytics.
