Principal Substation Engineer – Remote

About the Role

Our client is seeking a seasoned Prinicpal Engineer to drive high-voltage substation projects from early-stage conception through construction and commissioning. This is a 12-month contract opportunity offering remote flexibility, with a preference for candidates who can engage periodically with the Juno Beach, FL office. You will serve as the technical anchor for all assigned substation initiatives, ensuring designs meet interconnection agreements, industry codes, and project specifications.

In this role, you will collaborate with development, transmission, and construction stakeholders to deliver cost-effective, safe, and compliant substation solutions. You will also manage external engineering resources, oversee major material procurement, and provide technical oversight that keeps projects on schedule and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead all phases of assigned substation projects, from conceptual engineering and scope definition through construction, commissioning, and close-out.
  2. Partner with Early-Stage Project Managers and Development groups to define engineering requirements, secure sites, and obtain necessary permits.
  3. Provide technical oversight and due diligence for external Engineers of Record, ensuring compliance with interconnection agreements, IEEE, NESC, ASCE, and other applicable standards.
  4. Develop scopes of work, solicit bids, evaluate proposals, and award contracts for geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services through established supply chain processes.
  5. Coordinate with transmission owners, operators, and ISOs to align project designs with off-taker requirements and grid interconnection documentation.
  6. Manage long-lead material orders and support procurement with scope creation, review, and timely shopping-cart preparation to mitigate schedule and budget risks.
  7. Represent engineering interests in management briefings, risk mitigation discussions, and cross-functional coordination with estimating, legal, and commissioning teams.

Required Qualifications

  1. 7+ years of progressive engineering experience, with a strong focus on high-voltage substation design and project execution.
  2. Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering (advanced degree is a plus).
  3. Demonstrated project engineering or project management experience with a bias for action and on-time delivery.
  4. Deep knowledge of industry codes and standards, including IEEE, NESC, and ASCE, as applied to substation projects.
  5. Proven ability to manage external engineering consultants, contractors, and material suppliers in a competitive sourcing environment.
  6. Excellent communication and stakeholder coordination skills, with experience presenting to various levels of management.
  7. Willingness to travel occasionally within North America as project needs require.

Preferred Skills

  1. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in a related discipline.
  2. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  3. Experience collaborating with component OEMs to adapt designs to utility-scale philosophies.
  4. Familiarity with regulatory filings, depositions, or hearings in support of legal teams.
