Lead Engineer – Substation Projects
Lead Engineer – Substation Projects
About the Role
Our client is seeking a seasoned Lead Engineer to drive high-voltage substation projects and strengthen cost-estimating capabilities within their Engineering & Construction (E&C) organization. This is a 12-month remote contract opportunity based out of Juno Beach, FL, offering standard business hours and the chance to shape critical energy infrastructure from concept through commissioning.
In this role, you will serve as the primary engineering authority on assigned substation initiatives, balancing technical rigor, schedule adherence, and budget discipline. You will collaborate across transmission services, estimating, legal, and OEM partners to ensure every project meets interconnection requirements, industry standards, and corporate objectives.
If you bring 15+ years of progressive engineering experience, deep substation design expertise, and a bias for action, we invite you to apply and help deliver safe, cost-effective, and reliable solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate cross-functional teams to drive successful E&C substation projects, representing internal and external interests through presentations, progress briefings, and risk mitigation updates to leadership.
- Partner with Transmission Services to review interconnection documentation—including system impact studies, facility studies, reactive and harmonic analyses, and interconnection agreements—ensuring full compliance with ISO and Transmission Owner requirements.
- Serve as the primary liaison with transmission owners, operators, and ISOs, confirming that project deliverables meet off-taker specifications on time and with precision.
- Manage all long-lead major material orders to proactively minimize schedule delays and budget overruns.
- Lead substation project scope-of-work creation, review, approval, and shopping-cart preparation for engineering services and materials in collaboration with supply chain partners.
- Support the E&C Cost Estimating team by providing project feedback, technical guidance, and scope modifications that refine estimating templates and improve accuracy.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering resources to establish project priorities, detailed work plans, and clear lines of demarcation.
- Champion efficient, cost-effective, and safe project execution in accordance with department processes, industry standards, and regulatory policies.
- Oversee commissioning activities to ensure seamless project turnover and achievement of corporate milestones.
- Provide engineering support to Legal during regulatory filings, depositions, and hearings.
- Engage with component OEMs to adapt and enhance designs, aligning them with organizational philosophies and long-term reliability goals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering (Electrical strongly preferred).
- 15+ years of progressive engineering experience in the power or heavy industrial sector.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in substation design and engineering for high-voltage projects.
- Demonstrated project engineering and/or project management experience with a proactive, action-oriented mindset.
- Valid driver's license with no alcohol- or drug-related driving offenses within the last five years; license must be current and unrestricted.
- Willingness and ability to travel within North America as project needs dictate.
Preferred Skills
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in a related discipline.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Experience working directly with ISOs, transmission owners, and regulatory bodies.
- Familiarity with E&C estimating processes and scope development for substation projects.
